Pardew's public attack on Bristol Rovers' methods was out of order
The Southampton manager, commenting in a national newspaper after Saints had beaten Gillingham 4-1, with Rickie Lambert scoring the first, had a right go about the striker's fitness when he moved to the south coast from Rovers.
Pardew said: "Rickie's fitness wasn't right when he joined us. When he came here, it was the first time he'd been with a club of Southampton's standing and previously hadn't been pushed, nor had to push himself.
"But we've worked him hard, and now he's a much better player."
What on earth was that all about? A public attack on the methods of fellow professionals was out of order.
What Mr Pardew has quickly forgotten is that his team recently lost 3-2 at home to a club apparently of "less standing" than his with players who were obviously not as fit as his. I hope Rovers, and Paul Trollope in particular, have looked into Pardew's comments but I am glad they have not gone public on it.
Far better for our players to run rings around them, providing they are fit of course, when Saints come to the Memorial Stadium next April. Who knows they might need the points to prevent them going into the bottom division.
But looking forward now to two big home games, Trolls must freshen things up after another disappointing display on the road at Southend.
Ok he stayed loyal to the team thrashed at Norwich, but we showed the same old failings on Saturday, not waking up until we were two goals down..
I remember our management being excited at beating other sides to sign Dominic Blizzard. If he is that good why can't he get into our midfield? If he is fit he should get a chance against Yeovil.
I'm fed up of plugging Andy Williams. Mark Wright has had enough chances now, surely Williams must start in a home game. And how about gambling Trolls by playing the exciting Ben Swallow on the left? If you are good enough you are old enough.
Our recent visits to St Mary's in Southampton and Carrow Road in Norwich showed just how vital it is that we get better facilities if we are ever to compete at a higher level. Hopefully Nick Higgs will soon give the nod for the redevelopment of the Memorial Stadium … even if only to improve our standing as a club.
