Bristol Rovers return with a bang – so should Lambert be a sub?

Sunday, February 15, 2009, 19:08

It was once said that it was far better to play and lose than not to play at all. Well, after so long without a game, it was even better for Bristol Rovers to go out and win, especially so convincingly at high-riding Scunthorpe United.

The way they comfortably sealed an impressive three points against The Iron, particularly without 20-goal Ricky Lambert, showed that our boys must have had loads of pent-up energy through not playing for two weeks.

Now, the big debate before Tuesday night's game against Yeovil Town is whether Ricky should come back into the side if he is 100 per cent fit, or should Paul Trollope stick to a winning team and put him on the bench?

It was great to see Darryl Duffy and Jo Kuffour both score at Scunthorpe and I think I would start with all three strikers against the Glovers at the expense of Jeff Hughes, who seems to play better away from home as he showed again on Saturday. Trolls now has the luxury of goal-scoring potential from many areas of the side – even Lewis Haldane found the net for Oxford United at the weekend.

We must play an attacking line-up and take the game to Yeovil. They may have won four on the trot but they are a club in turmoil and, let's face it, on the law of averages it is about time we recorded a win over them.

I would also start with Craig Disley as our attacking midfield player. He showed what we have been missing in that area when he came on in Rovers' previous home game against Cheltenham Town.

I was disappointed to see he was back on the bench at Scunthorpe but Trolls can argue he was right because he came away with three points in the bag.

It was fascinating to switch on the TV on Wednesday to see 60,000 fans in a minute's tribute to former Rovers player Joe Haverty before the start of the Republic of Ireland versus Georgia World Cup qualifying match.

Haverty died recently aged 73, and I remember back in 1964 as a youngster (OK, a teenager) how I could not believe that a star like the former Arsenal and Blackburn Rovers winger was going to be weaving his magic at Eastville Stadium. Of course he was coming to the end his career and only turned out 13 times for the Gas but it was good while it lasted.

Let's hope we can display his attacking skills against the Glovers; surely tomorrow is the time to lay the bogey and get our first-ever win over them.

That would then set us up nicely for next Saturday's home game against top-of-the-table Leicester City and turn on attacking skills the little Irishman would have been proud of.
