Bristol Rovers fan's view: Williams made things happen

I suppose a draw at home against 10 men was bit of an anti climax after all the hype and expectation of the last week writes Dennis Payter.

Paul Trollope wanted to make the Memorial Stadium "a fortress" but the Seagulls made a nasty mess on the ramparts by taking a surprise lead which meant for the first time we were chasing the game.

Things had been so different in the first-half with some free flowing attacking football from our boys with Jo Kuffour in particular wreaking havoc and going close on a number of occasions.

But as is often the case, once Brighton had a player sent off they tightened up, sat back and made difficult for us to break them down. It was disappointing to concede from a corner and probably Danny Coles' only mistake of the game apart from his miss kick which brought another fine save out of the impressive Andresen.

Then Brighton tightened up even more at the back and there was a greater need for some width to get behind their packed defence although we lacked height up front once Chris Dickson went off.

Once again the width did come from Andy Williams, who I said last week could do a job for us wide on the right. He made things happen once he came off the bench, was never afraid to take people on and created the equaliser for Kuffour with another of his dazzling runs.

Williams is worth a starting place, particularly in home games, I will give Mark Wright the benefit of the doubt in that he is still settling in here and probably his style at the moment is more suited to the away line-up. He seems to lack the pace to attack defenders wasting several openings to get good crosses in during the first-half.

Jeff Hughes battled manfully in midfield but it meant we lacked width on the left again because of his frustrating habit of turning inside all the time. Things improved on that flank once Ben Swallow came on, and I noticed the Seagulls put two defenders on the skilful and speedy youngster straight away. But it has still been a great start to the season. Now will come three big games Southampton, Norwich and Leeds.
