Bristol Rovers fan's view: Williams proved a point with performance against Oldham
Don't you just hate it when people say I told you so, but I did say after last week's encounter that Williams ought to be in the line-up from the kick off. Trolls, why don't you give me a ring on a Friday and I will help you pick the side?
Williams caused havoc again this week with his direct runs at the Latics defence and must surely get a start at Brentford even if we do bring in another striker this week.
Make no mistake this was a better win than last week's 2-0 victory against Millwall for Bristol Rovers. Oldham were strong, uncompromising and well organised, often putting nine men behind the ball. They were willing to settle for a point until Jo Kuffour's magnificent late strike.
The armchair supporters watching the goal on television will give Kuffour all the credit, but it was Williams who terrorised the defence and laid off the ball perfectly for the winner.
The goal will do a power of good for Kuffour who I think has been missing Rickie Lambert with his perfectly weighted through passes. Darryl Duffy had worked hard, but was getting no change out of the visitor's defence, although it has to be said the service was not very good to the front men.
It was a pity that Mark Wright did not tuck away a great chance in the first half instead of putting it weakly over the crackerjack.co.uk/bristol/pubs-and-bars" target=_blank>bar, it would have settled everyone's nerves and given him a bit more confidence.
But I don't think he has settled in well enough yet to justify taking the wide right slot ahead of David Pipe who always puts in a solid shift and fights his way to the by-line.
Pipe also deserves to be in the starting line-up next week. Blizzard is another who must be close to a place. He makes himself available all over the pitch for the ball and is not afraid to stick his foot in. Chris Lines has done nothing wrong, but the reason we are now stringing results together is that players know they are facing strong competition for their places. One of those knocking on the door is Ben Swallow whose exciting runs down the left can add another dimension to this side.
The defence again looked very solid thanks to the Byron Anthony and Danny Coles partnership while Carl Regan has settled in very well and man-mountain Mikkel Anderson looks unbeatable.
So Trolls, you and Lenny are quietly putting together a useful squad and if you are finding it tough picking a side please give me a ring.
