He will always be remembered
NEIL Armstrong's recent death triggered worldwide tributes. His "one small step for a man", the first human on another celestial body, was an epochal event the world will never forget.
He is the one astronaut sure to be remembered centuries hence, though his feat was really the collective triumph of the thousands of people involved in NASA's Apollo programme.

Armstrong's moon walk voyage came only 12 years after the Russians launched the first sputnik and only 66 years after the Wright Brothers first flight. But the moon race was an end in itself. There was no motive to sustain the huge investment and maintain the pace of the 1960s. Otherwise there would be footprints on Mars by now.
