Mark Regan: Bristol Rugby won't have it all their own way
But there is an awful lot of room for improvement in quite a few areas.
The line-out didn't function at all, we didn't see Luke Eves or Junior Fatialofa go crashing up the middle, the contact area was poor – and London Welsh's second try was unforgivable.
I may sound harsh, but that is exactly what they would have been saying in the analysis room earlier this week. Fingers would have been pointing in there.
I have heard a bit of talk about nerves during the game, even among the senior players. But to me that isn't an excuse.
You can't simply say you were nervous. You are supposed to challenge nerves and turn them into a positive.
Bristol played badly and I didn't see much of a game-plan other than the kicking, which admittedly went quite well.
In the end, though, it was a massive relief to come away with a win – and that owed quite a bit to some individual brilliance.
London Welsh outplayed us for long periods of the game, but I am confident that performance will act as a blessing in disguise.
It's a perfect wake-up call to remind Bristol they won't have it all their own way this season.
I have looked at the squad for tomorrow's match at Birmingham & Solihull and I can see Paul Hull making three or four changes. I would not be at all surprised to see David Blaney, Mariano Sambucetti, Redford Pennycook and Jack Adams come into the side.
A few selections like that would remind everyone that their place in the side is not guaranteed – and this should be used as a kick up the backside for everyone.
I can see there being a massive improvement this weekend. Everyone who is selected has a good chance to put down a marker – and I can see a bonus-point victory.
I would certainly like to see Blaney start, because he came on and made a big impact last weekend. I want Bristol to do well – and after spending this week working on the contact area and line-out, I expect them to win convincingly tomorrow.
