Luke can go on to be a Bristol Rugby legend

Saturday, April 04, 2009, 07:00

I was delighted Luke Eves signed a new two-year contract at Bristol and committed his future to the club.

After all I remember him parading around the Memorial Stadium in his nappies, because when I started my Bristol career Luke's dad, Derek, was the captain.

Luke is young now, aged 19, and still has a lot to learn but he has the potential to go on and become a club legend like his dad.

He had offers to go elsewhere. But his dad advises where Luke should play and Derek thought it was best Luke remained at Bristol whether the club stays up or goes down.

Luke has the ability to play for England –he has already captained the Under-20s in this year's Six Nations.

It would also be nice to see another Bristolian win a full England cap. I don't think there has been many people from the city to wear the red rose since I made my England debut in November 1995.

I believe the only other Bristolian to win an England cap since then is Alex Brown, who is at Gloucester. Luke has the world at his feet.

Bristol, meanwhile, still have a chance to avoid relegation from the Guinness Premiership. We are nine points behind Worcester with three games left. We can do it but we are talking about miracles.

I have beaten the drop with Leeds. Yet this time, Worcester need to lose all their remaining matches and they are too good a side to do that. All we can do is go to London Irish today with hope, rather than expectation, of claiming a win.

I was ecstatic last Sunday when Bristol finally got that monkey off their back and claimed their second league win of the campaign. It had been coming following previous performances against Harlequins, Leicester and Wasps.

I have a big day coming up on Monday when I hope to prove my fitness and, should I overcome the foot ligament problem, I will be off on holiday like the rest of the squad.

The only people due at the club next week will be the physios, fitness staff and the injured players' group of Iain Grieve, Jason Hobson, David Blaney and myself. All of us are working hard but it would be nice to have a holiday.

I have been training hard –swimming, cycling and running – with all this training I could become a triathlete!

But I am hoping to get a final appearance at the Memorial Stadium by running out against Wasps on Sunday, April 19. I've reached 200 Premiership appearances. It would be nice to get to 201 and maybe 202.
