Pupils cycled to school in preparation for the 16th annual Bristol's Biggest Bike Ride.

The students and parents from Henleaze Infant and Junior School helped launch the schools competition yesterday, when everyone who cycled could enjoy a free breakfast.

Other schools are being encouraged to get involved in this year's fundraising cycle event.

There are five bike rides to choose from on Sunday, June 21, ranging from 9 to 38 miles, all starting from Millennium Square and heading towards a traffic-free Portway, as well as venturing into the countryside beyond.

All rides finish at the Harbourside where there will be entertainment for all the family from 11.30am to 6pm featuring music, stalls, bike displays, demonstrations and cycling information.

Pupils in Henleaze took part in slow bike races and made mosaics in bike designs.

Infants teacher and travel plan co-ordinator Shelley Dixon said that the morning's activities were a great success.

"We are all looking forward to Bristol's Biggest Bike Ride and we hope that lots of children, parents and teachers at the school will take part. This morning was brilliant. By doing this event, it showed that children are able to cycle. We usually have around 20 or 30 coming in each day by bike, and some use scooters as well."

All pupils, including those outside Bristol, can take part in Bristol's Biggest Bike Ride and help win prizes for their school. Prizes for the winning primary and secondary school include Thulé cycle carriers and a Bike to School Breakfast.

The school with the most children taking part will also be recognised. Last year, 90 children from Southville Primary School took part.
