'£1 billion won't solve youth unemployment'
EVEN £1 billion is not enough to solve the youth unemployment crisis, MPs have warned.
More than 6,180 young people are claiming job seeker's allowance in Bristol and the surrounding area, latest figures show.

The government's £1 billion Youth Contract pays £2,275 to employers who recruit under-24s who have been unemployed. But the Commons Work and Pensions Committee said that on its own the scheme was "insufficient" because youth unemployment was so bad. Latest figures show that the number of under 24s who have been on the dole for over a year in Bristol and the surrounding area was 995 last month – up from 130 a year ago.
Thornbury and Yate MP Steve Webb, left, a Minister in the Department for Work and Pensions, insisted the government was doing "a heck of a lot" to tackle the problem.
