Thursday, November 05, 2009, 07:00

A group of young people from across the city have been chosen to perform in hit musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang when it arrives in Bristol.

About 80 students drawn from Stagecoach performing arts schools were invited to audition for the touring production, which flies into the Bristol Hippodrome on January 13 next year until January 30.

The children had to learn the song Teamwork from the show and perform it both solo and in groups, in front of an audition panel from the production company.

A total of 38 were successful after five hours of auditions at the Bristol Community Dance Centre, Hotwells. The students came from Stagecoach schools in Yate, Bristol Central, Bristol North, Long Ashton, Portishead, Clevedon, Hanham and Keynsham.

Portishead
Portishead is a coastal town in North Somerset, with a population of 21,000.
Portishead's history dates back to Roman times. Its name derives from the 'port at the head of the river', having been called Portshead and Portschute at times in its history and Portesheve in the Domesday Book, and was locally known as Posset. The town was built on the mouth of a small tributary; the High Street once met the water at the top of the river. Iron rings, evidence of where the old fishing boats used to moor can still be seen today on the street's stone walls.
