Portishead's John Morgan is back at school in a bid to win his European card

Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 07:00

Portishead professional golfer John Morgan faces a return to European Tour School for the fourth time in Spain this week.

Once again his season has been marred by injury. His latest setback was when he tripped on a bedpost in a hotel in Austria in September, broke his toe and missed a month's golf.

So it was almost inevitable that he failed to retain the card he won after his achievements on the Challenge Tour last year.

Morgan, 31, pictured, tees off in the second stage of qualifying at Arcos Gardens, Jerez, in Southern Spain on Friday.

He travelled from Bristol last Friday to prepare and his target is to finish high enough after the four-round examination to progress to the Tour School itself.

That is played over 72 holes at another Spanish venue, the PGA Catalunya course near Girona, from December 3. The leading 30 players win tour cards for the 2010 season.

Morgan started this season well enough and made money from his first five tournaments. But his ranking was not high enough to guarantee starts in some of the more lucrative events.

He entered every event this year but was only eligible to make 16 starts. That made it difficult to accumulate the £230,000 haul necessary to retain his card.

Morgan suffered nine successive missed cuts before winning £14,000 in the Johnnie Walker at Gleneagles and £20,000 at the Masters at Castellon in Spain. His season's earnings of £75,000 left him in 184nd place in the order of merit. Only the leading 115 are guaranteed cards for the following year.

Former Somerset and England amateur Lee Corfield (Burnham & Berrow) will be joined at Hacienda del Alamo, Murcia, by Cumberwell Park's Steve Surry, who finished his season as runner-up in the Europro Tour Championship at Slaley Hall and fourth on the overall money list.

Yeovil's Marcus Higley attempts to qualify at Costa Ballena after finishing 171st on tour.

Portishead
Portishead is a coastal town in North Somerset, with a population of 21,000.
Portishead's history dates back to Roman times. Its name derives from the 'port at the head of the river', having been called Portshead and Portschute at times in its history and Portesheve in the Domesday Book, and was locally known as Posset. The town was built on the mouth of a small tributary; the High Street once met the water at the top of the river. Iron rings, evidence of where the old fishing boats used to moor can still be seen today on the street's stone walls.
