Portishead Christmas lights fundraising drive

Friday, October 16, 2009, 07:00

A new fundraising drive has been launched to secure the future of Portishead's Christmas lighting display for years to come.

Portishead's Christmas Lights Committee has set up a new fundraising team to raise thousands of pounds to pay for new, energy saving bulbs to be used in the display, hailed as the best in North Somerset.

The committee, run by a team of dedicated volunteers, decided to use energy-saving bulbs in the display after fears were raised that the 15-watt bulbs which are currently used may eventually become obsolete.

Although stocks are fine at the moment, with the EU rules to phase out 100-watt bulbs already under way, committee members were concerned that in the future, 15-watt bulbs may also be discontinued. Each year, around 5,500 bulbs are used in the display which runs from the top of the High Street to the roundabout near the Whitecott Stores.

Work to put up the lighting display starts in November and a grand switch-on of the illuminations is planned for November 30.

Portishead
Portishead is a coastal town in North Somerset, with a population of 21,000.
Portishead's history dates back to Roman times. Its name derives from the 'port at the head of the river', having been called Portshead and Portschute at times in its history and Portesheve in the Domesday Book, and was locally known as Posset. The town was built on the mouth of a small tributary; the High Street once met the water at the top of the river. Iron rings, evidence of where the old fishing boats used to moor can still be seen today on the street's stone walls.
