Pill residents urged to join climate change action event

Tuesday, October 13, 2009, 07:00

Residents in Pill are being urged to join a special event to highlight the dangers of climate change.

People in the village are being asked to join Pill Community Forum's environment group in an international day of action on climate change on October 24.

The event is aimed at influencing world leaders at the UN Copenhagen Conference in December to act swiftly and determinedly to save the earth's environment from collapse.

A series of events are planned in the village during the day, including creating a human chain around the precinct at 11am to mark the high water line in Pill if the ice caps melt.

Campaigners are also planning to form the number 350 out of people as part of the protest.

Three hundred and fifty is the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere – 350 parts per million (ppm) – to stabilise the world's climate.

People will also be asked to sign a pledge to reduce their own carbon footprint by 10 per cent in 2010.

There will also be a Fair Trade community cafe in the precinct from 10am to noon and from 2pm to 5pm there will be activities and films in the community centre, a bike ride at 2.30pm and guided walks around the village's beauty spot.
