Bristol cyclists ride to beat MS

Monday, July 27, 2009, 07:00

A team of cyclists are riding 12 miles from Cumberland Basin to Pill and back to raise money for multiple sclerosis charities.

The bike ride, along the River Avon, has been organised by the daughter of an MS sufferer and is raising money for BRAMS (Bristol Avon MS Centre) at Frenchay Hospital and MS People's Help Fishponds.

Emily McCarthy's dad Shaun, whose MS means that he has to use a wheelchair, is chairman of MS People's Help and fundraising manager for BRAMS.

There will be at least 20 people taking part in the event, which takes place on Sunday, July 26.

The team will leave from the picnic area at Cumberland Basin and ride along the cycle path, under Clifton Suspension Bridge, along the cycle track to Pill, on to underneath the M5 motorway bridge and back to the picnic area for a BBQ.

Local café Taste has supplied sausages and burgers, and Castallonos of Fishponds has supplied food.

Cotswold Spring is supplying bottles of spring water, and the team have also received vouchers for refreshments from Tesco and Morrisons.

Two of the MS specialist nurses at BRAMS, Denise Owen and Kate Golding, are taking part and have so far raised £800.

Any late entries are welcome – call Shaun or Alison on 0117 3402992, 0117 9023460 or 0778 447 0177.
