“@Krysia1974
When traffic was light in the 50's the centre worked and the pictures show how pleasant it was, but 40 years later it was so clogged with traffic and cowds of people trying to get across it that the gardens were nothing more than a traffic island with three lanes of fasting running traffic around each side. Even getting to the Neptune statue as a pedestiran was like taking your life in your hands.
People **** off the changes to the centre, and i'm the first to admit that they aren't amazing, but go there any lunchtime and people actually use the space, to sit, meet friends, have lunch etc. By the late ninties that can't be said of the 1950's layout. More than a decade since it was completed the trees have matured and people can walk freely from the harbour in the centre. just a shame the decided to pull down the Bristol Co-operative Workers Building at the end of Broadquay. Probably Bristol's greatest architectural loss (post war).”

“bobob 3; look at Bristol Bridge 1903; quite a few signs evident even then...and the buildings were grubby with all the coal use.”

“Its striking, how polluted Bristol has become with road signs, traffic lights, double yellow lines etc.
Compared to those photographs, it looks like the modern day version has been vandalised!”
