BRISTOL Zoo is asking members of the public to vote their favourite local icons onto the Bristol Walk of Fame.

Last spring the zoo unveiled the Bristol Walk of Fame to celebrate the best of Bristol as part of the zoo's 175th birthday celebrations.

The walk features 49 of the city's most renowned people, places and icons from across the historic, creative, sporting and wildlife spectrum.

This week is your last chance to vote for the 10 icons you think should be added to the illustrious list this year. Voting closes at the end of the day on Monday, January 16.

To cast your vote from a list of 41 icons, visit the zoo's website at www.bristolzoo.org.uk/walk-of-fame -2012.

The public can vote for up to 10 icons each.

The list of possible new additions includes the French Resistance heroine who settled in Long Ashton, Andree Peel; restaurateur Barny Haughton; "the Stig" Ben Collins and Wallace and Gromit script author Bob Baker.

Also on the list are Bob Woodward, who founded the charity CLIC; Bristol City and Bristol Rovers Football Clubs; TV presenter Carol Vorderman; playwright and Mamma Mia! script writer Catherine Johnson; planetary scientist Colin Pillinger; Darth Vader actor David Prowse; and co-founder of Aardman Animations David Sproxton. Former executive chair of Bristol Old Vic and current managing director of the Watershed Dick Penny is one of the others on the list along with Clifton-born suffragette Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence; former England rugby player Gareth Chilcott; architect George Ferguson; and writer Hannah More.

Also on the list are "chick lit" author Jill Mansell; tennis player Jo Durie; Sustrans founder John Grimshaw; wine importers John Harvey and sons; founder of the Methodist movement John Wesley; snooker player Judd Trump; city centre pub the Llandoger Trow; cricketer Marcus Trescothick; and former England rugby player Mark Regan.

Bristol-born singer-songwriter Nik Kershaw is on the list; as are the first female Afro-Caribbean High Sheriff of Bristol Peaches Golding; co-founder of Aardman Animations Peter Lord; the band Portishead; community activist Princess Campbell; chief executive of the FA Premier League Richard Scudamore; retired figure skater Robin Cousins; and Rosie and Wendy, the elephants of Bristol Zoo.

The list also includes Sir James Dyson – the man behind Dyson vacuum cleaners; actor Sir Michael Redgrave; playwright Sir Tom Stoppard; co-founder of financial services company Hargreaves Lansdown, Stephen Lansdown; The Old Duke jazz and blues pub in the city centre; 19th century businessman William Henry Wills, who presented the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery to the people of Bristol in 1904; and finally the Wow! Gorillas arts trail which captured the imagination of people across the city over the summer last year.

The new inductees will join current icons such as Banksy, Massive Attack, The Wurzels, Cary Grant, Ian Holloway and Bill Bailey.

Wendy Walton, head of commercial operations at Bristol Zoo, said: "The Bristol Walk of Fame aims to celebrate the city's most renowned people, places and icons from across the historic, creative, sporting and wildlife spectrum. The fact that the icons are voted for by the public makes it even more special as it is the people's choice."

The Bristol Walk of Fame is a trail of specially designed plaques within the grounds of the zoo, with each plaque bearing the names of famous inductees, and is sponsored by local organisation Mama Bear's Day Nursery and Pre-school.

"Why will this website not allow URLs to be typed?"

It's worse than that. The website coverts every URL to a tinyurl reference but then, if that reference contains a banned sequence of letters (like f f s) it asterisks them out.

    Go figure, as they say...”

“Why will this website not allow URLs to be typed?

The URL needed is as in the article but with "wow-walk-of-fame" and not "walk-of-fame -2012"”
