We need girls to join us and help save our Brownie pack

Thursday, November 20, 2008, 21:56

A Brownie pack that was set up more than 50 years ago is facing closure because it doesn't have enough members.

The St Mary Redcliffe Brownie Pack was formed in 1952 but is now struggling to attract new recruits.

At the moment there are only four members and the pack has had to be suspended. Now Liz Hyett, the pack's Brown Owl, and her mum Betty Morris, who founded the group, are appealing for more girls to join.

Mrs Hyett said: "We used to have a full pack of 24, but we have dropped in numbers so have been suspended until they pick up again.

"We have to have 12 children to be able to run the pack, for insurance reasons.

"There are four girls at the moment. We have tried to persuade them to go to other packs, but they are hoping that we can get ours back up and running the way it used to be."

Mrs Hyett said numbers were falling because fewer children were living in nearby high-rise flats.

She said: "People don't realise we are there at the centre, even though we have done poster campaigns.

"The council isn't putting people into the flats at Redcliffe, but are instead housing them in Bedminster and Ashton."

They are now appealing for more youngsters – girls between the ages of seven and 10 – to join up.

Mrs Hyett said: "We really want to keep going, especially as the Guide movement will be celebrating 100 years of Guiding in 2010.

"There will be lots of celebrations taking place, and we would love to be part of them."

The St Mary Redcliffe Brownie Pack meets between 6pm and 7.30pm at the Redcliffe Church Centre on Prewitt Street every Monday.
