More matches called off due to freeze

The freezing weather across Britain has continued to hit the sporting fixture list today with another six football matches called off this morning.

Now the Coca-Cola League One match between Swindon Town and Southend United and the League Two games at Port Vale, Darlington, Macclesfield and Rochdale, with Aldershot, Wycombe, Notts County and Morecambe the respective visitors, have been postponed due to frozen pitches.

Aberdeen’s Homecoming Scottish Cup clash with East Fife today has also been postponed because of the snow.

And more fixtures are set to fall by the wayside with pitch inspections due to take place throughout the morning.

Yesterday the cold snap put paid to the Championship matches at Barnsley, Charlton and Watford, with Crystal Palace, Cardiff and Southampton the respective away teams affected.

Seven further games in League One have also fallen victim to the wintry weather with new dates now needed for Bristol Rovers v Huddersfield, Scunthorpe v Cheltenham Town, Hereford v Brighton, Yeovil Town v Northampton, Peterborough v Carlisle, Colchester v Stockport and MK Dons v Crewe.

Also off in League Two are Accrington Stanley v Luton, Barnet v Rotherham and Chesterfield v Lincoln.

North of the border, the Homecoming Scottish Cup fifth-round tie between Airdrie and Dunfermline is off, as is the Third Division game between Elgin and Dumbarton.

The cold has also affected the start of rugby league’s Super League season, with tomorrow’s game between Harlequins and Bradford at the Stoop off due to a frozen pitch.

Racing at Newbury and Warwick is also off, while tomorrow’s meetings at Exeter and Hereford have also fallen victim to the weather.
