Trial begins of Bristol terror suspect

Thursday, June 04, 2009, 07:00

A jury was today due to start hearing evidence in the case of a former public schoolboy accused of terror offences.

The process of selecting a jury to hear the trial of Andrew Philip Michael Ibrahim, known as Isa, took place yesterday at Winchester Crown Court.

The 20-year-old student and Muslim convert, of Comb Paddock, denies making an explosive substance with intent to endanger life and the preparation of terrorist acts.

Muslim convert Ibrahim was arrested in Bristol on April 17 last year and accused of making an improvised vest to contain the explosive substance hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, also known as HMTD.

Controlled explosions were carried out at his home in Comb Paddock after his arrest.

Potential jurors were sent away for the day and will be sworn in tomorrow.

Trial judge Mr Justice Butterfield told the court the trial would open to the jury tomorrow.

The trial is expected to last up to six weeks.
