Sainsbury's to open new shop in Bristol city centre

Friday, October 30, 2009, 07:00

Sainsbury's is to open a new shop in Bristol city centre.

Work will start on transforming a former clothes shop at 1-3 Broadmead next week and the company hopes the new 'local' convenience store will be complete early in the new year.

It will not be a full-size supermarket but a 211sq m (2,276 sq ft) shop selling a range of fresh food, food-to-go products and health and beauty items.

There will be an in-store bakery serving breakfast and lunch, a hot food counter and a salad bar.

The store, which will also have self-service checkouts, will employ about 20 people.

Stephen Boyce, head of property convenience for Sainsbury's said: "We look forward to opening our new store at Bristol Broadmead and bringing the Sainsbury's fresh food offer to the area in a convenient and modern store.

"Jobs will be created for the local community and as soon as our plans are in place we'll confirm the number of positions and start our recruitment activities.

"Playing an active part in local communities has ensured Sainsbury's has been around for 140 years and throughout the refurbishment we will work with local representatives to ensure our contribution to Bristol continues to be a positive one."

Sainsbury's now has more than 300 convenience stores and plans to open another 150 by 2011.

New 'Locals', as the company has branded them, have recently opened in Edinburgh, London, Cheshire and Bradford.

The supermarket chain will open its first environmentally-friendly convenience store in the new Southgate shopping centre in Bath early next month.

The 278sq m (3,000 sq ft) store's green credentials include low-carbon building materials and low-energy heating and lighting as well as a water usage reduction system.
