New Bristol Rovers keeper Andersen aiming for one of the top five clubs in the world

Mikkel Andersen has arrived at Bristol Rovers with his sights set sky high – which is maybe not surprising given the fact the 20-year-old Dane is 6ft 5ins tall.

Signed on Tuesday from Reading on a loan deal which will keep him at the Memorial Stadium until at least the end of December, the imposing keeper is hoping to make his Pirates' debut in tomorrow's home game against Millwall.

Andersen has yet to make a first-team appearance with the Royals and his experience of English football so far is limited to 12 loan appearances chalked up at Torquay United, Rushden & Diamonds, Brentford and Brighton.

But Reading see the youngster as a potential first-choice in the seasons ahead and he certainly does not lack ambition. "I'd like to get to the highest level in the Premiership and at the moment I see Reading as part of that path.

"Eventually, I want to play at one of the top five clubs in the world. If you aim for the sun, you might end up by the stars!" said Andersen.

The Scandinavian became the youngest keeper ever to make a senior appearance in Danish football during his stint with his hometown club AB Copenhagen.

"I was first-choice keeper there at 17, played seven league games and then got transferred to Reading. Because I was so young when I started, I think it did me good," he said. "I joined Reading when I was 18 and have just signed a new deal there which goes for two more seasons.

"I wanted to get out on loan to get games and the manager at Reading has allowed me to do that.

"Bristol Rovers have been after me for a while and this gives me a chance to come and get some experience of first-team games, so it's a really good opportunity.

"I've had short-term loans at other clubs but hopefully this will give me a chance to get a run of games. I want to play and that's why I'm here.

"I played five games at Brighton last season and really enjoyed playing first-team football."

The goalkeeping position at Rovers so far this season has been a veritable merry-go-round with long-term first choice Steve Phillips and understudy Mike Green both departing on loan, while Fraser Forster arrived for a month from Newcastle United before being whisked away by Norwich City.

The Pirates not only landed Andersen before Tuesday's transfer deadline but also agreed a year-long deal with Rhys Evans, and the pair will be battling it out for the gloves over the coming months.

"The competition at Reading is hard, and that's how it should be – that's how I expect it to be here as well because everyone wants to be No 1," said Andersen.

"Hopefully I can prove a point. I can't wait. The pressure is on now but I love it."

"The main difference between football in England and back in Denmark is simply the passion for the game from the fans, and that means there's a lot more pressure on you when you play.

"The pace of the game is different too – really, it's just a different world."
