Kicking out breast cancer

SOLICITORS swapped their suits for football kits to take part in a fundraising match in support of a Bristol cancer charity.

Queen Square-based Metcalfes organised the six-a-side football tournament in aid of research charity Abreast.

The firm was joined at Frenchay Cricket Club by Allianz Insurance, Barclays Wealth and Towry among others.

Metcalfes was supporting its charity for the year, Abreast, which focuses on supporting research to enhance the quality of life of all women with breast cancer facing mastectomy.

It was formed by Bristol breast surgeon Zoe Winters, who is involved in research looking at the effects different types of surgery have on cancer patients' quality of life. Patients are heavily involved in the research, giving their views on the impact different types of breast surgery have affected them.

The charity is based in Bristol but is working with breast cancer specialists at 30 sites across the country. It is hoped that the research will enable doctors, surgeons, nurses and their patients to make more informed decisions about the best course of treatments for women affected by breast cancer in the future.

One of the organisers of the charity football tournament, Judith Ellery, a partner at Metcalfes, said: "This is a very special event being held in the midst of the World Cup, and we hope to raise much needed funds for Abreast, our Charity of the Year."

The family event included a barbecue and games such as Beat the Goalie, along with a raffle and silent auction of sports items.
