John Barrowman leaves Bristol fans wanting more

Tuesday, November 03, 2009, 07:00

MORE than 200 eager fans turned out to see John Barrowman at a book signing yesterday.

The actor, who appeared in the Cribbs Causeway branch of Waterstone's, signed latest book I Am What I Am.

Some were left disappointed however after staff capped the queue for Barrowman who had to rush back to London to appear as drag queen Albin/ZaZa in La Cage Aux Folles.

He's used to wearing high heels in the show but yesterday the Torchwood actor looked casual in trainers, black jeans and a suit jacket.

The book follows on from his autobiography Anything Goes and includes juicy titbits from behind the scenes of Doctor Who and Torchwood.

Fans Clair Walker, 28, and Helen Keniston, 27, came all the way from Dilton Marsh in Wiltshire to meet their idol.

Miss Keniston said: "Clair wanted to have 'I am what I am' tattooed on her back. She's in love with John Barrowman.

Miss Walker said: "We've watched him ever since Live and Kicking and have always wondered why he disappeared from that show until we read the first book."

The gay icon is loved by many including Deanna Stove, 15, from Weston-super- Mare, who has travelled to London, Birmingham and Cardiff to meet her hero in the past.

She said: "I've met him five or six times. I think he's lovely and was really jealous when he kissed James Marsters in Torchwood. I actually spoke to him this time so am really proud of myself." Alexa Cartwright, 41, from Usk, South Wales, and her sister, Lisa Williams, 44, from Ross on Wye were the last in line.

Mrs Cartwright said: "I would have gone somewhere else to see him if I'd missed out. I bought eight tickets to Jack and the Beanstalk once and he was ill so we missed out then. We just went to see him another time.

"He's down to earth really. I think he's lovely."
