Cows get stuck in estuary mud

When seven cattle got stuck in the notoriously treacherous mud of the river Parrett estuary in Somerset, there was only one force to call in – the mire brigade.

Five fire crews from Devon & Somerset fire brigade, the two volunteer-manned hovercraft from Burnham-on-Sea Area Rescue Boat, a tractor, ropes and specialist matting were all needed to bring the distressed and panic-stricken animals to safety.

The banks of the river, at West Huntspill, near Burnham-on-Sea, looked more like the scene of some natural disaster as men worked up to their waists in mud and water to free the beasts.

The operation took two hours and involved one of the hovercraft, Light of Elizabeth, travelling far out into the estuary to throw a rope around one straggler who was towed to the shore by tractor.

The herd are believed to have mistakenly entered the mud when fleeing from a nearby field after they were “spooked” by thunder.

Burnham-on-Sea Area Rescue Boat operations manager Steve Perks said the successful rescue was down to teamwork.

He said: “The fire crews and BARB’s volunteers worked closely throughout the afternoon to free the trapped cattle. Good teamwork ensured a successful outcome here.We were delighted to be able to help the animals, who were clearly distressed after they had become trapped in the mud.”

The Earl of Wessex will see Light of Elizabeth in training when he visits BARB and Burnham Coastguard station on Friday.
