Bristol's 20mph zones move step closer
Bristol City Council wants to hear the public's views on the proposals, which would restrict speeds on more than 250 roads.
The south zone includes Southville, Bedminster and Windmill Hill, while the east zone includes most of Easton, Whitehall, Redfield, The Dings, Barton Hill and St Paul's.
A public notice has listed every street that would be affected by the speed slow down.
As previously reported in the Evening Post, the list is much more extensive than originally planned.
Highways officials had originally only wanted to include a small number of specific streets in the zones.
But following enthusiastic feedback from the public, executive member for transport Councillor Jon Rogers decided that adopting whole zones was the way to go.
Critics claim they are unenforceable and argue that sticking to 20mph can be difficult in modern cars.
Bob Bull, of campaign group The Association of British Drivers, said: "The real threat from inconsiderate drivers remains; they didn't take any notice of 30mph, why should they obey 20mph?
"If drivers are forced to drive below the natural speed, their concentration drops. The police time necessary to enforce the lower limits could be better used in improving general driving standards, which are the major cause of accidents."
But Mr Rogers believes slower vehicles makes for safer vehicles and says if the project proves a success then it could eventually cover the whole city.
Any objections to the scheme need to be submitted by January 8 but the council has said further feedback from the public will only affect whether specific roads are included or not.
If the zones get the go-ahead they are expected to be introduced in the spring.
Installing the necessary signage will cost around £250,000, but beyond that there will not be speed cameras or physical traffic calming features such as speed humps.
The first three 20mph zones were introduced in Sheffield, Kingston-upon-Thames and Norwich in 1991, and since then around 450 have been set up across the country.
Until 1999, specific consent from the Secretary of State was needed but now local authorities do not need his approval.
