Bristol runaway caught by Scotland Yard

Tuesday, November 25, 2008, 16:18

A Bristol man facing burglary charges who escaped from a psychiatric hospital with a suspected murderer was caught by police today, Scotland Yard said.

John Slavin, 44, was arrested at about 1.30pm at an address in Bexleyheath, south east London, after a week on the run.

A nationwide manhunt was launched after Slavin escaped from Springfield Hospital in Wandsworth, south London, along with John Claydon last Tuesday night.

Claydon, 28, who is accused of murdering 22-year-old Ben Foster in Bath in April, was captured in Twickenham on Friday.

Slavin, originally from the Bristol area, is charged with aggravated burglary and was on remand to Southwark Crown Court.

Police had warned members of the public not to approach him.

It is alleged he may have raided two shops since fleeing the mental health unit.

Scotland Yard believe the day after his escape he robbed a book shop in Kensington after brandishing a knife at staff.

Two days later Slavin was allegedly involved in a second robbery where a laptop was taken from a shop near Ladbroke Grove.

Both Slavin and Claydon were being assessed for mental health conditions while at the hospital.

Dog handlers and a helicopter team were called in to help in the search after the pair absconded.
