Bristol Museum appeal for Queen's Silver Jubilee clothing

Bristol Museum appeal for Queen's Silver Jubilee clothing

Bristol museum curators are looking for a costume from the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977 to display in M Shed, the city's new history museum opening in 2011.

The museum is looking for items of "jubilee" clothing, which could include a red, white and blue outfit worn together especially for the occasion, any item of clothing featuring a union flag or any item of clothing made for the occasion, such as a paper hat.

The costume will form part of the Living Bristol gallery, helping to illustrate the everyday and memorable experiences shared in Bristol homes and neighbourhoods, as well as special events experienced as part of a crowd.

Catherine Littlejohns, social history curator, said: "Lots of Bristol residents celebrated the jubilee by decorating their homes and organising street parties. In Stockwood the community came together at a party held on the green with a fancy dress competition and jelly and ice cream. We have a story from someone who was seven at the time, who remembers helping to decorate the street with bunting and dressing as a television set with a picture of the Queen on it.

"However, not everyone threw themselves into the celebrations. The growing punk movement ensured there were dissenting voices and a section of society at odds with the jubilee revellers and to highlight this, we are also looking for 1977 punk clothes or memorabilia such as a Sex Pistols T-shirt or tartan miniskirt."

If you can help, contact Catherine on 0117 903 9816 or email Catherine.littlejohns@bristol.gov.uk.

The deadline for the appeal is Friday, March 26.
