Bristol World Cup latest: Brazil 10 Argentina 4

Friday, July 03, 2009, 07:00

Bristol school children have been letting their imaginations run riot writing make-believe match reports of World Cup 2018 games held in Bristol.

The pupils of Stoke Bishop Primary School were given a lesson in how to report on a sports event yesterday as part of their annual sports week – and were then given free licence to fill in the blanks from a World Cup match.

The results were mouthwatering. "Brazil beat Argentina 10-4 at Ashton Vale last night" roared one report. England thrashed France in another and elsewhere Robinho scored the fastest goal ever in football, shooting straight from the kick off to give his side the lead after two seconds.

Perhaps he was inspired by Beyonce singing the Brazilian national anthem, all noted in the report which captured the occasion, the colours and the drama of the event.

Then came the truly surreal. Britney Spears made a shock appearance for England and Gordon Brown even came on as a late substitute.

In nine years' time there could be international players from Bristol City or Bristol Rovers gracing the World Cup stage in Bristol.

There might even be someone from our schools. There would certainly be a host of household names to inspire the next generation of youngsters and to entertain the current crop who, by then, will be old enough to take to the turnstiles with their Bristol friends.

Carys Nicholas, Emma Trayhurn and Heather Dewe, all 11, shared the same favourite player, Cristiano Ronaldo.

And the prospect of the £80 million man's appearance in Bristol more than secured their attention.

Carys said: "My dad went to the 2006 World Cup in Germany. If it is in Bristol I can go too. I can't imagine seeing Ronaldo. That would be amazing.

"I thought the match reports were fun. I don't play football but I could do one for my swimming club."

Emma added: "I like watching Manchester United matches. If Ronaldo was in Bristol I would be really excited and try to go to watch him."

Aidan Thomas, 11, would prefer to see Real Madrid's other record signing, the Brazilian Kaka.

"I will be 20 in 2018 so I can definitely go to the games. Kaka is the star in my match report. I watched the last World Cup (Germany 2006) and it would be great to be able to go to matches in Bristol."

Head teacher Phillipa Hepworth was delighted the children had tried their hand at writing reports and added another talent to their growing repertoire.

"Sports week is a fantastic opportunity for the children to try new things and focus on healthy living and keeping fit," she said.

"We have had a range of athletes and experts into the school with the aim of instilling in the children that anything is possible and showing them new avenues of sporting achievement.

"The World Cup is obviously something that will catch their attention and could only be good for Bristol."

The England 2018 World Cup bid team will be visiting Bristol on July 13 and Bristol City Council have until December to convince them Bristol is worthy of inclusion as a host city.
