This new hospital is extraordinary
T hey only started work on it 12 months ago. But the new Southmead Hospital has gone up so quickly.
Already the steel superstructure of this extraordinary building has been completed. Windows and walls are now following.
On parts of it the Bath stone-like cladding has already been put into place.
Inside work is under way on running miles of air conditioning, plumbing and electrics.

As the 2014 deadline for completion nears more than 1,000 people will be working on this site.
Remarkably it is almost within touching distance of the existing Southmead Hospital.
But what is being built bears no relation to what is there at present. In fact it bears relation to any hospital, anywhere in the country.
It will be state of the art in so many ways. From the computerised checking-in system to the individual rooms with bathrooms this will set a new standard for hospitals.
But its designers have also drawn lessons from the past recognising the importance of natural light and the proximity of plants and wildlife that Florence Nightingale realised helped recovery.
All of those associated with this project are bursting with pride. And when it opens everyone else will understand why.
This really will be a jewel in Bristol's crown.
