People who will use Yate's new £12.5-million community health centre can get an update on progress and find out what the complex will offer at an event organised by local NHS bosses.

Work started on the project last May and is due to be completed in the autumn.

Once open, it will provide outpatient appointments to save patients having to travel to hospital, as well as a minor injuries service, X-rays and other diagnostic tests.

It will also feature an integrated children's centre, funded by South Gloucestershire Council, where young people and their families can get advice, information and support.

Children's centres provide a range of neighbourhood services to help parents and carers and having one linked to the health complex will allow council staff and members of the Connexions youth service to work closely with NHS colleagues.

The new building, within Yate Shopping Centre, will replace the existing health centre and West Walk GP practice and will also provide space for services currently available at the Chipping Sodbury clinic.

The aim of the NHS South Gloucestershire event next week is to let people know about services patients will be able to access closer to their own homes, such as physiotherapy, paediatrics, gynaecology, services for the elderly – from a hearing loss clinic to podiatry – and the minor injuries service.

But members of the project team also want to hear from people who have been helped by particular services so they can find out how best to meet the needs of those who will use the centre.

Sue Pratt, of NHS South Gloucestershire, said: "The event will be a chance for patients to hear about what is happening and to give feedback about services they use.

"They can give us their input into how our services could be modelled, drawing on their experience."

"There will also be an exhibition so people can see mock-ups of the building and workshops on specific services."

Workshops will cover areas such as cardiology, diabetes, general surgery, audiology and respiratory conditions.

Members of patient groups are among those who are expected to attend the event in Chipping Sodbury Town Hall on Wednesday, February 11, but it is also open to the public.

Two sessions have been planned – from 2.30pm to 5pm and between 6pm and 8.30pm.

Anyone interested in going along can phone 330 2408 to register their interest.
