We need to stop this practice
I WAS pleased to hear at long last a new EU law means there is now a complete ban on battery hens. Hens now have to be either free range or kept in "enriched" cages with more space. I'm sure thousands of people will agree that improving conditions for battery hens is long overdue and I'm sure many people will pay the price hike for a happy hen's egg than a cheap battery egg from battery cages where hens live in the size of a piece of A4 paper per bird. Animal welfare is the most important issue here, not how much it costs us.
Battery cages are now being replaced by "enriched" cages which have to be at least 750 square metres in size. This is still quite small, but it's a step in the right direction.
Fewer than 50 per cent of all eggs currently bought in the UK are free range.
Most still come from battery hens despite us knowing the horrors they suffer. A complete ban I'm sure would mean people wouldn't have the option of putting the price before animal welfare.

Also I would like to point out hens aren't the only creatures to suffer for food production.
Dolphins I learned recently are being harmed during tuna fishing and pigs and cattle are being kept in confined pens.
It's impossible to know whether the liquid or powdered egg used in foods such as ice-cream, mayonnaise and pasta has come from a battery egg from a battery cage environment. Banning this practice altogether is the only way to ensure we know what we're getting when we sit down and enjoy a cup of tea with a biscuit or mayonnaise and egg sandwich.
