We need belief in front of goal, says Cheltenham boss Allen

Cheltenham Town boss Martin Allen blamed missed chances after his side's bid to earn a glamour FA Cup clash with Aston Villa was ended at Doncaster last night.

Doncaster midfielder Brian Stock's two goals and a Sam Hird strike were enough to settle the third round replay at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Allen, however, watched his side miss a host of chances to leave him to feel like 'puking' and insisted afterwards that his side should have caused an upset.

Ashley Vincent was guilty of spurning two good opportunities in the first-half before Elvis Hammond and Jonny Hayes missed chances after the break.

Allen said: "It was an incredible game because we probably missed four of the best chances you will ever see. You had to be here to believe it. The Doncaster fans behind me were laughing because even they couldn't believe their luck.

"It has been the same story in a lot of the games, we have played this season and we have to start taking our chances. If we could start converting opportunities in some of our games this season we would not be in the bottom four, we would be looking up and wondering if we could make the play-offs.

"The players have to start taking responsibility for the missing chances and we have to be more lethal and show more belief in front of goal."

Allen was also left fuming at referee Stuart Attwell's decision to award a corner that led to Doncaster's second goal and he said: "It was a diabolical decision and then they go and score a goal from it."

Allen paid tribute to his patched-up side that was shorn of eleven first-team players through a mixture of injury, ineligibility and suspension.

"The players' attitude was first-class," Allen said. "We were a bit short of numbers but whoever plays always show bags of commitment and I really felt we could cause an upset on my way up here."

Ian Westlake failed a late fitness test and missed out, but Allen is hoping to have him available for Saturday's relegation clash at home to Brighton.

Meanwhile, Allen has been frustrated in his attempts to bolster his squad during the transfer window.

"There isn't any money to bring anybody else into the club," he said. "We have to cut the wage bill and get players out before we get any in and we are working hard to try and do that."
