George Ferguson: We need Green Revolution now
As we watch the spectacle of the people of Iran taking to the streets with their 'Green Revolution' I am beginning to think that we need to force the hand of government here with our own Green revolution – albeit a very different one.
This week I went to see the current climate change shock film The Age of Stupid at the new Faith Space in Southville.
-

I had been waiting for it to come to a cinema near me rather than drive to a soulless out of town "car park" cinema.
If you have not seen Age of Stupid please seek it out.
The producers give viewers the choice of a "no swearing" version or a "swearing" version.
I recommend the swearing version – it is a tough message that merits tough language.
Having spent that night wondering what else I should do to play my part in tackling climate change I woke up to the news that it is now "official" that temperatures will rise by 2C within 30 years and to stop it tipping over to a 6C rise or more means we shall have to take drastic action now.
This means that whatever we do there will be up to a million UK homes at risk of flooding – and yet we are planning more homes in areas of risk. Stupid or not?
It also means that many of the planned nuclear generator sites could be at risk of flooding or erosion. Stupid or not?
There are endless national and regional committees and talking shops, but I am yet to see any real resolve by national or local government to deal with a threat to our children's future and even their survival.
It seems when it's tomorrow's threat rather than today's reality we are not prepared to do what has to be done.
C learly governments, of either hue, do not have the guts to deal with this the most vital of all issues and we have to do what we can to shame them into action.
Here Bristol has a real chance to show that we have what it takes to make a real difference.
Not only does tackling climate change have to be at the top of the city's agenda, it needs to be on every single agenda for change, whether for education, food, health, housing or transport.
Why oh why are western governments propping up the car industry that is fuelling the fires of climate change? Stupid or not?
Why oh why are we not heavily taxing aviation fuel and are still planning to expand our airports?
As a result it is cheaper to go by air than by rail. Extremely stupid.
Instead of fighting wars over oil we should be co-operating over measures to reduce its use.
Instead of spending billions on Trident we should be spending them on reducing our energy needs and building wind and solar farms rather than mounting petty campaigns against them.
Since our national politicians refuse to take a strong lead on this, I urge Bristol to take a lead and show what one city can do with determination.
To do so it needs us as citizens to pull together rather than whinge as soon as something impinges on our own lives.
Tragically it does seem we are living in the Age of Stupid.
And it seems that unless we stop tinkering at the edges and wake up to the threat, we are leaving a dangerous future for our kids.
Let's start our Green Revolution now.

“Do people still seriously believe the myth that global warming is man-made?
Put this in the same file as the 'vaccination is good for you' myth, 'AIDS is caused by HIV' myth, 'cancer is uncurable' myth, and the 'Labour party has your best interests at heart' myth.
Until people stop believing these New World Order myths designed to control us, and start thinking for themselves, nothing will change for the better.”

“Go George! We're planning on showing it at Bristol University at the beginning of next term (hopefully followed by a panel of speakers - it does tend to leave you a bit depressed, and a good remedy might be to get the chance to talk about what actions you can take).
Quite a few other showings are planned around the city - by lots of different groups, and the good thing is, if there doesn't happen to be a screening close to you, you can also go to the "stupid" website and organise your own.
