Have your say on North Somerset power line

Tuesday, November 03, 2009, 07:00

Concerned residents fighting proposals to put a new 400,000 volt power line through the countryside will be able to grill power bosses about their plans at a special meeting later this month.

Mounting public pressure about possible proposals to erect a new overhead power line, which would slice through Wraxall, Nailsea and Backwell, has forced bosses at National Grid to hold an extra consultation meeting.

The meeting will be at Scotch Horn on November 26 from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm.

Initially National Grid had not planned a meeting in Nailsea and had held consultation events in Tickenham and Backwell.

But Nailsea Town Council stepped in to ask power bosses to organise a meeting in the town following mounting concern about the proposal from residents.

Residents have launched the Save Our Valley (SOV) campaign to fight off the proposals.

SOV spokeswoman, Sue Turner, said: "We are delighted that National Grid has finally decided to listen to the people of Nailsea.

"And we hope that they do listen to what are very real concerns about this proposal."

The consultation meeting will be followed by a public meeting, organised by the SOV group, on November 27 at Scotch Horn, Nailsea from 7.30pm. A session will be held at Portbury village hall on November 18 from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm, and at Trinity School Hall, Marjoram Way, Portishead, on November 10 from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm.

Nailsea
Nailsea's economywas based on coal mining which began as early as the 16th century. By the late 1700s, the town had a large number of pits and was visited by the social reformer Hannah More who founded a Sunday school for the workers.
Nailsea's coal mines attracted John Robert Lucas, a glass manufacturer, in 1788 and the glass works he established eventually became the fourth largest of their kind in the United Kingdom. The works closed in 1873 but "Nailsea" glass is still sought after by collectors around the world.
The site of the glass works is covered by a supermarket car park lleaving it accessible for future archaeological digs. Remains of many of the old pits are still visible around Nailsea
