Hunt for Nailsea train guard attackers

Wednesday, November 11, 2009, 07:00

Three people are being hunted by police in connection with an assault on a train guard at Nailsea and Backwell railway station.

British Transport Police are appealing for the public's help to identify the trio who they believe were involved in an incident at about 11am on October 9.

A female train guard was verbally abused and spat at by one of the two youths after she asked them to leave the train because they did not have tickets and were unwilling to pay the fare.

The youths, who were accompanied by a young woman who was in possession of a child's ticket, had got on the train at Parson Street station in Bristol.

As soon as they boarded the train they went into a toilet and were uncooperative when asked by the guard to produce a ticket or pay their fare.

As they got off the train at Nailsea and Backwell station, one of the men spat in the train guard's face. The two males are described as white, in their mid to late teens and were both wearing grey hooded tops.

The female teenager was white, about 16 years old with blonde hair.

She was wearing a short, brown leather jacket and had a brown Staffordshire terrier dog with her. Anyone who recognises those captured on CCTV is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40.

Nailsea
Nailsea's economywas based on coal mining which began as early as the 16th century. By the late 1700s, the town had a large number of pits and was visited by the social reformer Hannah More who founded a Sunday school for the workers.
Nailsea's coal mines attracted John Robert Lucas, a glass manufacturer, in 1788 and the glass works he established eventually became the fourth largest of their kind in the United Kingdom. The works closed in 1873 but "Nailsea" glass is still sought after by collectors around the world.
The site of the glass works is covered by a supermarket car park lleaving it accessible for future archaeological digs. Remains of many of the old pits are still visible around Nailsea
