Body found at Nailsea and Backwell railway station

Thursday, October 29, 2009, 11:30

An investigation has been launched after the body of a man was found on an embankment at Nailsea and Backwell railway station.

Police were called to platform at the station, at Station Road, at around 8.30am today after reports that a man was lying on the bank.

The discovery was made by a rail passenger on his way to catch a train.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: "This morning, at around 8.30am, police were informed that a body of a white male was found at the bottom of the steps at Nailsea railway station.

"At the moment there appears to be no suspicious circumstances and an investigation is ongoing."

Station Road has been closed all week for roadworks to be carried out and is due to open again tomorrow.

A spokesman for North Somerset Council, which is carrying out the works, said: "We suspended the roadworks temporarily at the request of the police while they dealt with the incident."

Rail services were disrupted as a result of the incident and for a period of time, trains were unable to stop and pick up passengers at the station.

The Backwell side of the station was closed off during the morning and travellers could only access the platforms via the Nailsea side of the station.

The matter will now be passed to the coroner.

Nailsea
Nailsea's economywas based on coal mining which began as early as the 16th century. By the late 1700s, the town had a large number of pits and was visited by the social reformer Hannah More who founded a Sunday school for the workers.
Nailsea's coal mines attracted John Robert Lucas, a glass manufacturer, in 1788 and the glass works he established eventually became the fourth largest of their kind in the United Kingdom. The works closed in 1873 but "Nailsea" glass is still sought after by collectors around the world.
The site of the glass works is covered by a supermarket car park lleaving it accessible for future archaeological digs. Remains of many of the old pits are still visible around Nailsea
