Belly dancers at Nailsea Christmas Fair

Tuesday, November 03, 2009, 07:00

Belly and ballroom dancers will be just some of the attractions at this year's Nailsea Christmas Fair.

The event, on December 4, is a highlight in the town's calendar and this year more attractions are planned than ever before.

There will be charity stalls lining the High Street selling a variety of Christmas goodies and an entertainment stage erected in Somerset Square.

Line, belly and ballroom dancers will be taking to the stage throughout the evening, while music will blast from the Royal Oak pub car park.

As well as the musicians and dancers other entertainment includes magicians, martial arts experts, stilt walkers, jugglers and fire-eaters.

Some of the acts will be in the shopping precinct while others will be promenading throughout the town centre and High Street.

A programme featuring all the attractions will go on sale soon.

Stalls are also available to hire and cost £30 for commercial traders and £15 for charities.

A working party led by Nailsea Chamber of Trade and Commerce is organising this year's festive extravaganza. The next meeting of the group is on November 11at 5.30pm at Gilly's Cafe and all those wanting to get involved are welcome.

Nailsea
Nailsea's economywas based on coal mining which began as early as the 16th century. By the late 1700s, the town had a large number of pits and was visited by the social reformer Hannah More who founded a Sunday school for the workers.
Nailsea's coal mines attracted John Robert Lucas, a glass manufacturer, in 1788 and the glass works he established eventually became the fourth largest of their kind in the United Kingdom. The works closed in 1873 but "Nailsea" glass is still sought after by collectors around the world.
The site of the glass works is covered by a supermarket car park lleaving it accessible for future archaeological digs. Remains of many of the old pits are still visible around Nailsea
