First moving bus stop to help disabled
FIRST has agreed to move a city centre bus-stop after being accused of not being "disabled-friendly".
From tomorrow, First services 42, 43, 44, 44A and 45 will no longer terminate at the bus stop on Broad Quay, but will run through, turn around at the roundabout at the top of Prince Street and will then terminate at the coach stop on the west side of Broad Quay, which is being redesigned as a bus stop.
This will remove 10 buses per hour from the stop and is expected to make a significant difference to the functioning of stops on Broad Quay, according to the city council.
In May, First received a complaint from Bishopsworth Tory Councillor Richard Eddy, who is currently recovering from the effects of Guillian-Barre syndrome and spent 10 months of 2010 in Frenchay Hospital and uses a four-wheeled walker or crutches to aide his mobility.
On three separate occasions he tried to catch the No. 76 bus from the city centre only to find the driver either unable to spot him waiting at the bus stop near the Radisson Hotel or he was forced to access buses stopping in the middle of the road.

“First (and slightly less the council) botched that up with it being a last minute change. I not employed by them nor the council so unaccountable to them and they both ultimately would do what they do want.
When the 2 coaches (and the Abus) parked there obviously there would been space to and with the coaches they obviously came will come from far away with tourists. They would not know of the local First Bus last minute change and issue to coaches to sod off to somewhere else.
The council has the responsibilty to educate and promote that the long time drop off area now has a different use even if that means they need to draft in a few people for say a fortnight to have a quick word with the coach driver or perhaps someone from First do this 'Job' instead but it got to be expected that for a while coaches is not going to know about the changes (
as it was not like it was published with a respectable timeframe nor that it was announced non locally.
Abus however should really known (they local) but they are a bus operator and it will be a bus stop so aside from 'parking' they not doing wrong as First likely would use it also as a bus park given the opportunity. First and the council certainly have the responsibility to inform all operators of changes in advance!
it is a Sunday. I do know the council has high profile drop off and coach layby areas in the for-mentioned places. It assumed they will end up there at some point as the place on the centre will be no longer open to them.
Cabot Circus in time for Xmas is to open a year round dedicated coach park next to its multistorey car park concealed from most public view.
Being told to go back accross the road to the 75 and 76 stop at the moment would be the only sensible move because it be unsafe not to do so.
We have to wait and see if First and the council committed to this stop move but what is clear Bristol today Sunday September 4th has had a major review of its bus services, frequency and those bus journeys that had been supported by the council that now commerical, removed or replaced.
Its expected also that people will be out at bus stops replacing timetables and renumbering services replaced (for example 503 now the 512 and 517/18 and 500 is replaced by several services. Then there is also Bus Stops with RTI (Real time info) they also need to be ensured that correctly updated!
However some of the changes will not see effect till Monday (such as the 5xx services and P&R)”

“First implemented the last in first out method. The 75 and 76 has been at that bus stop since the Millennium remodelling. also the new capacity option would not be available to it (75/76) as it can not do a u-turn opportunity that available to the 42-45 services at the roundabout as the buses came from Cribbs and Henbury and goes to Hengrove via Bishopworth and Hartcliffe
Noticed it was a Councillor creating the rebellious cause for something to be done anyone else First actions would take alot longer and be of less weight. Being someone on the council helps! even tho we all know Transport wise First the one that often calls the shots!”

“@hughami1 the coaches will be given there marching orders.
Likely end up at Cumberland Road, Anchor Road or Cabot Circus.
Knowing First they use the new capacity to deter any unwised coach driver by filling up any unused capacity in Broad Quay as space to park buses minus a driver”

“Damn! Just for once they do something that suits the people of East Bristol and some Tory boy goes and messes it up. Why can't they move his bus, or give him a great big sign to wave at the bus?”

“Hi all the only problem that bus stop is used by coaches so i take it will be enforced by parking services to stop other vehicles using the stop”

“The 'coach stop' on the opposite side originally meant to been a bus stop after the millennium works anyway as it is the been the odd one out for years.
Back when the city centre was remodelled even the current taxi pick up point (which has bus shelters) is also a redundant bus stop.
Making efficent use of Broad Quay is also in Ask Bristol 'Rapid Transit' scheme of things. They want the centre remodelled again to aid BRT/ bendy buses and less use of ,ethods that is not public transport, rapid transit and green methods.
Bristol Businesses were consulted earlier in the year tho Bristol CC not gave the feedback it was not seen favourablely when BEP spilled the beans.”
