Toms wins on Inglestone Common

Western area visitor Ben Toms was an eight-mark winner of the Kingswood Club's 2009 club trial series, staged on Inglestone Common, near Wickwar.

In four laps of 10 sections, his lap scores were five, three, one and one, while runner-up Lee Hassall dropped four marks on each of his first two laps prior to completing his third without penalty. However, it went sour for him on the final lap, where he stopped in two sections.

Ross Thurlow was an easy winner of the Clubman expert class, and Wayne Holmes, Peter Drake and Fraser Dickin were separated by just two marks in a closely-fought novice class.

Tim Wheeler lost one mark in the ninth section on his last lap in the Over-40 class. He expected to be closely challenged by Nigel Tomkins, but the Stroud rider stopped in seven sections and incurred five single-mark debits.

Nathan Irwin and Cirencester veteran David Hammond both chalked up two class wins in the Swindon club's second grass track meeting of the year.

Northern trial ace James Dabbill retained the lead in the British championship despite being beaten into third place in the fifth round of the series near Ashburton, in Devon. Alex Wigg and Mike Brown took the top two places in the main class.

Dabbill also lost 24, but he incurred a seven-mark debit for late finishing after he had to change his rear wheel sprocket.

Sam Connor won the Expert A class and Yeovil's Ricky Wiggins took third place in the B group, and is still third in the title chase.
