Local motorcyling weekend preview

Weston-super-Mare brothers John and Paul Rutherford plan to show their rivals a clean pair of heels in the Frome club's sidecar motocross at Leighton.

The meeting is a round of the UMX series and 35 crews are involved in the battle for points in the three races on the Asham Woods circuit.

The Western Classic clubs British Bike bonanza weekend at Horsley, near Stroud, has attracted its usual star entry and two of the 25 races will count towards the British Classic Bike Championships. Regular race winners in action will include reigning champion Andy Robertson, Martin Coleman, David Bell and Adrian Cox.

There will be a lengthy interval in which historian Dave Stallworthy, from Yate, will be introducing riders who grabbed the headlines in the sixties such as guest of honour Vic Allan MBE.

The weekend action gets underway at 9am tomorrow with a round of the Rickman championships on sections out on the Cotswolds, as well as in the Sallywood Farm venue.

A couple of hours later, the Bonanza trial gets underway with 100 competitors.

Yeovil's Ricky Wiggins has won the first eight rounds of the South West Centre Trial Championships and he goes to round nine at Hartland in North Devon on Sunday seeking a further win.

Sixty others have entered the three-lap event at Cudlip Lane including Jason Lawer, Nick Baker and Cornwall area champion Ross Hancock.

On Sunday, the Wells club are running a timed-trial at Wookey and the Camel Vale event is being held at Par, near St Austell.
