The Wessex Centre branch of the BSSA staged a highly successful British Championship sidecar trial at Lulsgate last weekend and follows that up with a two-hour timed and observation trial at West Harptree, on the Mendips, on Sunday.

Regular award-winners who will be taking part in the event on a challenging Beaconsfield Farm circuit include Paul Baber, Paul Manning, Andy Scriven, John Leigh, Peter King and Stuart Bowden.

It is an 8am start for the 150 competitors in the Taunton club's long-distance jubilee event in West Somerset the same day.

The race starts and finishes at the Raleighs Cross Inn at Brendon Hill. In between, the competitors face 23 observed hills and two special tests.

The toughest sections are expected to be at Slowley Farm, Kings Brompton, Court Sydenham, Tripp and Westcott Bank.

Many grass-track racing fans in the area will have vivid memories of the excellent charity meeting staged by the Somerton club, near Wincanton, back in March.

The same club has another meeting on Sunday at Walton, near Street. On this occasion, there will be sidecars as well as solo races.

With Lee Hicks, Clive Stoneman, Rob Wilson and Myles Simmons in the line-up, the racing in the three-wheeler events could overshadow that witnessed in the solo events – but there will not be many dull moments in the 50-race programme on the Asney Farm circuit, just off the A39. Bristol's Paul Derrick, John Week and Rod Melksham clash with Charlie Saunders, Lewis Leah and Harland Cook in the solos.

There are no motocross meetings locally this weekend, but a short trip will give enthusiasts a choice of events. There is action at the Little Silver Motor Park, near Exminster, Whiteway Barton, near Newton Abbot, Fishacre Barton, near Totnes, and a British two-stroke championship meeting at Landrake, near Saltash.
