Are motorcyclists being discriminated against?

I AM writing about vehicle parking at the Cabot Circus shopping centre.

I decided I would like to visit Cabot Now, since I ride a new motorcycle that cost the same as an average family car (£12,000), I thought it would be best to check what facilities the centre had in place to keep my bike safe and secure while shopping.

I firstly checked the website and this had no information to help, so I called the customer services department.

I was told there are no parking facilities for motorcycles, nor any plans to have any.

This surprised and shocked me. Millions of pounds had been spent on this new shopping centre with no consideration to the motorcyclists.

Why? Is it because we are not able to buy and carry as much shopping as a car driver, therefore not worthy of "parking"?

And/or is it because, in most "vehicle parking areas", motorcycles are not charged to park so the centre would not make any money out of us?

I feel there is a case of "discrimination" against people who want to use a motorcycle and not a car.

Motorcycles are here to stay and are getting more popular, so please think again.

Glenn Stacey, by email.

CABOT Circus director Richard Belt replies:

I would like to confirm that plans are in place to install a number of new motorcycle parking bays around the scheme and in the car park to cater for those that wish to access the scheme in this way.

Unfortunately, only a small number were in place in time for the opening of Cabot Circus on September 25 and we apologise for any inconvenience that this has caused.

We are currently in the process of installing new facilities for both motorcyclists and cyclists and the situation will be significantly improved by the end of October.

Please be reassured that accommodating a wide range of transport options is extremely important to us and we ask motorcyclists to bear with us whilst we equip safe and secure new facilities throughout Cabot Circus to cater for Bristol's motorcycling community.

“Mr Norman Ship is the car park manager at Cabot Circus, and he's a very helpful chap. He has suggested that motorcyclists use the ground floor beneath the central stairs for parking.”
