Wood up with the leaders in Spain

Thursday, April 30, 2009, 12:31

Nailsea's Chris Wood shot an opening round 66 to put him firmly in contention in the Open de España at the PGA Golf Catalunya.

The 21-year-old Bristol golfer, who as an amateur finished a spectacular fifth in last summer’s Open at Birkdale, shone again today on a course which brings back more happy memories.

It was here that Wood finished joint fifth in at the qualifying school held at the Girona course and secure his European Tour playing card.

His six-under par score included six birdies and an eagle at the 542-yard par five seventh hole.

But his score also included a double bogey six and the 18th hole - his ninth which was the only blemish on his card.

His back nine was a tremendous 31 shots which included three birdies and the eagle.
