Man dead in Subaru and BMW head-on smash near Bristol

Monday, August 31, 2009, 07:00

A man has died and at least two other people have been injured in a head-on car crash on the outskirts of Thornbury.

A Subaru Impreza and a BMW were involved in the smash in Oldbury Lane on Friday night.

All the emergency services were sent to the scene, together with the air ambulance, and in a difficult operation, took several hours to release all of those trapped in the wreckage of the cars.

Police said the 22-year-old driver of the Subaru, believed to live locally, died as a result of his injuries.

There were two people in each of the cars and all had to be freed by Avon Fire and Rescue crews from Thornbury, Speedwell and Avonmouth. One of the cars left the road and ended up in a ditch.

Some of the emergency crews were still at the scene three hours later.

Police are investigating the cause of the smash and have appealed for witnesses to the accident.

The accident happened on the road leading from Thornbury to Oldbury-on-Severn and Oldbury power station.

The Subaru was being driven towards Oldbury and the BMW towards Thornbury.

The fatality is the second in the space of seven days in South Gloucestershire. A week earlier, 26-year-old Patrick O'Donohue, of Patchway, and Jimmy Tyrer, 17, of Winterbourne, died in a crash in Stoke Gifford.
