Kuffour is the late hero for Bristol Rovers

Saturday, March 07, 2009, 17:06

Bristol Rovers 2, Leeds United 2. Jo Kuffour struck late to secure a point for Bristol Rovers just as Leeds United were ready to celebrate victory at the Memorial Stadium.

Robert Snodgrass set up one goal and scored another as the visitors looked poised to rekindle their promotion push with a come-from-behind win.

They had fought back after Jeff Hughes netted for the second game in a row to give the Pirates an early lead.

But Kuffour broke clear in the final minutes to rifle home a right-foot shot for a dramatic late leveller to ensure a repeat of the scoreline when the two clubs had met at Elland Road earlier in the season.

Rovers, who named the same line-up that had started the 1-1 draw at Carlisle a week earlier, had the better of the early stages and could have gone in front in the seventh minute.

Rickie Lambert's headed flick-on sent strike partner Darryl Duffy clear, but Leeds keeper Casper Ankergren advanced quickly to smother at the striker's feet.

Rovers made their breakthrough in the 14th minute thanks to fine work by David Pipe. The winger broke down the right and did well to evade Rui Marques' challenge and get in a cross that the onrushing Hughes sent spinning into the net with a volley from six yards to score for the second game in a row.

The Northern Irishman may not have connected cleanly, but that was of little concern to the jubilant Gasheads who sensed their side could capitalise on the Yorkshire club's indifferent recent away form.

Rovers skipper Stuart Campbell dragged a shot from 25 yards wide as the home side continued to press forward, but Leeds were back on level terms in the 27th minute.

Snodgrass delivered a superb cross and Luciano Becchio – who had headed the Whites' equaliser in their 1-1 stalemate at Oldham on Monday – rose well again to nod in from point-blank range.

The leveller galvanised the visitors, who started to have the better of things as the first half drew on.

But Rovers almost regained the lead early in the second half when Chris Lines fed Duffy, whose short from 20 yards curled just over the top.

Snodgrass had been the provider for Leeds' first goal, and he turned executioner after 58 minutes to put the visitors ahead.

Lines fouled Jermaine Beckford 25 yards from goal, and Snodgrass delivered a perfectly-judged left-footed free-kick which curled over the Pirates' wall and into the top corner of the net.

Rovers made changes to try to force their way back into the game, replacing Hughes with Jo Kuffour and bringing on Joe Jacobson in place of Aaron Lescott. Then, with 17 minutes left, Craig Disley came on for Lines in midfield.

Duffy was denied by the woodwork when his close-range header from a Steve Elliott lob came back off a post, but Kuffour broke clear at the death to prove the last-gasp hero for the Gas.
