Former Bristol City star Lita relishes return
LEROY Lita wishes it to be known he will not hesitate to upset friends and family alike when he returns to Bristol City later this week.
On loan at Norwich City, the 23-year-old Reading striker is looking forward to pitting his wits against former team-mates when he spearheads the Canaries' attack in Saturday's Coca-Cola Championship clash with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
And, if the opportunity arises, he is quite prepared to risk the wrath of supporters who, not so long ago, adored him.
"If I get chances I am not worried – I will score," declared Lita, who joined the Canaries on a short-term deal last month.
"I have a lot of good friends in Bristol and some of them are City fans. But my job is to score goals for Norwich and that's what I'll be trying to do.
"I still come back to Bristol when I can and I'm looking to catch up with my friends after the game. But business comes first."
Lita has experienced mixed fortunes since leaving Ashton Gate to sign for Reading in a deal worth £1 million in July 2005. Having established himself in the Royals' Premiership starting line-up, his stock rose still further when he played a starring role for England in the European Under-21 Championships in Holland in the summer of 2007.
But the striker's career has stalled since then. He fell out publicly with Reading manager Steve Coppell at the start of last season after falling behind Dave Kitson and Kevin Doyle in the Majedski Stadium pecking order and was subsequently loaned out to Charlton Athletic.
He again found first-team opportunities hard to come by this season and jumped at the chance to join Norwich when Canaries boss Glenn Roeder came knocking.
Despite his recent frustrations, Lita is backing himself to regain the form which made him one of the hottest young goal-scoring properties in the Premier League a couple of seasons ago.
He said: "I expect a lot from myself and I put pressure on myself. No-one else can put me under pressure as much as I do.
"Every player wants to be in the Premier League and I'm no different. Hopefully, I can score goals for Norwich and help them push up the table. That would be good for me and good for the club."
Of his departure from Reading, Lita commented: "The team is doing well so it's hard to get in at the moment. But I have a chance to play now and I'm looking forward to it.
"I know the fans here are desperate for the team to do well and the manager and everyone around the place, so hopefully I can be part of it.
"It's a big club, everyone knows about this place and the potential it has got so it was not a hard decision really. The manager spoke to my agent and he was desperate for me to come down. I wasn't playing at Reading so it was an easy decision."
