He is a man who always listens
THE words of Dr John Savage were so welcome (The Post Oct 10). History should and does teach us much and we need to always remember what can and has happened: i e recognising that slavery of any kind, past or present, is abhorrent.
His comments about the Merchant Venturers make a very clear statement that gives strength to the rather obvious idea that we may live on an island but as we surely know – "No man is an island...". Using the "society's resources for the betterment of the people of Bristol..." is to be greatly welcomed. John assures us he will continue to use the Society's aim to do just that.
I value the fact that John Savage seeking as he is to be elected as a Police Commissioner for Avon and Somerset, has such a wide ranging experience and knowledge of various institutions and society in general. A man who has been at "the top" in so many organisations and having to assist in making tough decisions. But I equally personally know of John's interest and willingness to listen to public debate about that most serious of matters – policing.
Some years ago the Merchant Venturers opened the doors of the Merchants Hall to a meeting of one of the Police and Community Consultative Group (PCCGs). I as minute taker for the meeting, public and members of the group were warmly welcomed into the building. By agreeing to host the PCCG the Merchant Venturers illustrated their stated " aim in life" as quoted above i e for life to be made better for people – on this occasion through policing and public discussion: people on the ground talking face-to-face with the local District Commander, police officers, councillors etc. John was part of that important policing debate and wanting to listen as I know he will if elected Police Commissioner, to what people are saying and able to make considered judgements.

We have a man of proven record in Dr Savage. He states the obvious, that we need all possible contributing partners in a determined effort to make a better future and that the present cannot be hindered by what has happened in the past – it should only assist us to go forward in a positive way.

“The South West Whistleblowers Health Action Group has a very different opinion of John Savage.

At the PCC question time at Bristol Council House on 18th October, Savage refused to answer this question posed by a member of the Whistleblower's Group:
"How will each PCC candidate demonstrate their commitment to strong governance, openness and public accountability?"
This question was selected by a group appointed by Voscur, the organisation that supports the Bristol voluntary sector. John Savage petulantly refused to answer it. All the other PCC candidates were civil enough to answer it. These qualities are, after all a requirement for the role:
