Mangotsfield United 2 Frome Town 0: Mangotsfield United's battling second-half performance saw them overcome the handicap of playing with 10 men to notch their first victory of the season.

Geraint Bater had been red-carded just before the interval for apparently throwing a punch at a Frome player, forcing his father and manager Phil into a second reshuffle.

Bater senior had to reorganise his side after losing striker Mitchell Page five minutes before half-time with a dislocated shoulder. The joint was put back in in hospital, but the injury will rule Page out for the next few weeks.

Striker Tom Knighton made his first appearance of the season after coming on as a substitute at half-time, with James Pilling also coming on as Mike Trought and Martin Paul were replaced. Knighton made a big impression with his pace on the left flank, and he was brought down for the penalty that gave Mangotsfield the lead before adding the second goal himself.

Frome had the better of the first-half exchanges and it needed a good save by goalkeeper Tony Court to deny Alex Lapham before skipper Matt Peters failed to hit the target after being given an opportunity by a defensive mix-up.

Shortly after Bater's sending-off, Joe Gomes shot just wide following a free-kick, and then on the hour Court made a good save to deny Peters before Matt Knapman cleared a follow-up effort off the goalline.

Mangotsfield took the lead in the 67th minute. Shaun Percival was booked for bringing down the speedy Knighton and Neil Arndale converted the resultant spot-kick.

Five minutes later, Mangotsfield clinched victory when Daine O'Connor broke down the right flank and his far post cross gave Knighton, who had pulled off his marker, the chance to beat goalkeeper Josh Payne with a far-post header.

Despite Frome pressure the Mangotsfield rearguard held out to keep a clean sheet, with skipper Scott Hendy and Rob Scott outstanding.

With Page and Lee Collier ruled out of tonight's derby at Paulton Rovers, Phil Bater has added Matt Brown and Connor Britton to his squad.
