Nicky Maynard is in no doubt he is ready to face Doncaster Rovers at Ashton Gate on Saturday if called upon.

Bristol City's 11-goal top scorer has not started a Coca-Cola Championship game since suffering a thigh injury in the 1-1 home draw against Coventry on February 6.

But the 22-year-old striker confirmed his recovery by scoring twice and terrorising Swansea's defence in yesterday's Totesport.com Combination reserve fixture at City's Failand training headquarters.

Maynard insists he is fit enough to play a full 90 minutes if required and says he is desperate to make up for lost time by starting against Doncaster.

Certainly, his performance in an impressive 3-0 reserve team success will give Robins manager Gary Johnson food for thought as he ponders his team selection ahead of the weekend.

Maynard played 65 minutes, looked sharp, could easily have netted four goals and is now putting pressure on Scotland international forward David Clarkson, who deputised while the club's record signing was sidelined.

"I feel ready to start and play a full game if selected," said Maynard, who was an unused substitute during Saturday's goalless draw against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

"I was disappointed not to come on at the weekend and I'm champing at the bit to play against Doncaster.

"It couldn't have gone much better for me. I feel my fitness is back to 100 per cent and I'm almost there as far as match sharpness goes.

"Now I just want to get my first-team place back and play regularly." Maynard scored twice in 20 minutes midway through the first-half, demonstrating an impressive turn of pace to race onto passes from Joe Edwards and Ivan Sproule respectively and beat Swansea's keeper with cool finishes.

Those strikes represented his first since he netted a wonder goal against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Boxing Day and Maynard claims his double will give him renewed confidence.

He said: "It's been a while since I scored and it was nice to get back on the scoresheet. They were two great balls into me and I managed to tuck them away.

"Strikers thrive on scoring goals and, hopefully, these two will spark me off again. I'm definitely feeling confident again."

Back from a one month loan spell at League One Brentford, striker John Akinde headed City's third goal on 70 minutes.

More pleasing still to watching manager Johnson will be the performance of Jamal Campbell-Ryce, who confirmed his recovery from a calf strain by playing 65 minutes. Fellow wide man Ivan Sproule also came through with flying colours and those two and Maynard are now in contention for a starting place against Doncaster.

Meanwhile, Johnson will be hoping three of his players come through tonight's friendly international programme unscathed. Paul Hartley and Chris Iwelumo are in the Scotland squad to face the Czech Republic at Hampden Park, while Lewin Nyatanga is expected to line up for Wales against Sweden.
