Former Bristol Rugby skipper Salter signs for Clifton

Friday, June 26, 2009, 07:00

Former Bristol Rugby skipper Matt Salter has boosted newly- promoted Clifton by joining the club.

Salter had also spoken to Cleve and Dings Crusaders.

He said: "The coaching structure is already in place at Clifton with John Barnes (head coach), Mark Regan (forwards coach) and Darren Lloyd overseeing things as director of rugby.

"I have joined primarily as a player. I know a lot of people at the club and I'm looking forward to playing with a few old friends.

"I spoke to other clubs but they were looking to recruit a player-coach, which would mean committing to the cause Tuesdays, Thursdays and every Saturday, but my main priority has to be to my coaching position with Bristol's Academy.

"Dings and Cleve needed a head coach and I wasn't able to commit full-time. Darren knows I will be on Academy duty from time to time and won't be available every week."

South West One champions Clifton, who kick-off their National Two South campaign against Rosslyn Park in September, are determined to establish themselves in the national leagues and Lloyd has been busy building a squad capable of sustaining their new status.

He said: "Our main aim is to ensure we are in this league again the following season.

"We have a settled coaching team in place and player recruitment is ongoing.

"Matt's Premiership experience and leadership qualities can only be of benefit to the club."
